EIGHT

The intense darkness immediately swallowed up the dog from sight. Fletcher kept on the path while praying Molly hadn’t veered off in a different direction.

He held firmly onto Leora’s hand as they continued to run through the pitch-black woods. They couldn’t stop even though his ankle throbbed painfully. No matter what, they had to stay one step ahead of those men.

His mind raced over the details he knew. Above all else, he didn’t understand why Ethan hadn’t gone out of the woods and called for help. Ethan knew this country like the back of his hand. He’d know going deeper into the woods wasn’t the fastest way to achieve the goal.

“I think it’s safe to slow down.”

Leora didn’t respond, and he looked over at her. She appeared to be struggling to breathe normally. Fletcher was really worried about her. He put his arm around her shoulders to steady her. “I wish we could afford to stop.”

She shook her head. “I’ll be oke. I just need to catch my breath.”

By now, they’d have found their friend. This was only a moment of reprieve. They’d keep coming.

Where was the logging company? They should have reached it by now.

Fragments of what Fletcher knew for certain and what he and Leora had gone through repeated in his head. The exhaustion went far beyond physical. His brain couldn’t process things properly, and he desperately needed to make sense of what was happening. One thing in particular troubled him. How had Ethan and Tanner gotten separated in the first place? He shared his concerns with Leora.

Leora dragged in several deep breaths before responding. “If they were both together at Sam’s and managed to escape, then something had to happen after they left the house.” Her voice was little more than a whisper. She needed to conserve her strength.

Fletcher returned to his troubled thoughts. There were far greater things to be worried about. Jade’s people would actively be searching for whatever they believed Tanner had taken. They’d have people in Colorado, as well. It was only a matter of time before they found it on their own, and when they did, Tanner’s life would be worthless. And so would theirs and Ethan’s.

“Look, the woods are thinning.” Leora nodded up ahead.

When he spotted the clearing up ahead, his relief was great. “We’re close to the logging company. Look, there’s the road.”

At least walking it would be easier than tromping through underbrush. Unfortunately, it would make them more visible.

“Where’s Molly?” Leora looked around for the dog.

“She’s probably reached the business by now. If she finds Ethan, she’ll come back to alert us.” The dog constantly impressed Fletcher by her skills. He thought about the pups in training. They had plenty of food to last them for a few days, and their water would last as long, but they’d grow restless without their usual training routine.

The woods had been cleared away. Lights illuminated the business grounds. An uneasy feeling had Fletcher glancing nervously around. It felt as if they had a spotlight on them compared to the darkness they’d come through.
